Our Lost Dog
Recently we had to put our beloved dog down. He was thirteen. For me to call him a ‘dog’ in a sentence is hard because he has always been known as our baby. Every dog owner knows that their special pooch is special because that is what we do. Our Otis was extremely special. I often joked that he was more human than dog, and I firmly believe that he thought he was.

The Supper
The wind had died down. The storm was finally over, just in time for the special dinner I was preparing. I whisked around the kitchen hurriedly trying to get the food prepared for my special guests that would be arriving soon. I was giddy with excitement as I pictured how our encounter would go, not so much with Beowulf and John Milton, but definitely Macbeth. He frightened me a little, but I still couldn’t wait to have them all at my glorious table. I stirred the chicken noodle soup some more as I contemplated what we would talk about.

The Deed
Larry sat in his car puffing on a cigarette. Loretta hated it when he smoked in the car, but he continued to do it anyways. Glancing out the window he watched as the young kids played basketball in the school playground. And the young girls were sitting on the bench chatting among themselves. He wondered if they had any clue about real life yet. Did they even know what could happen to them. Out of the corner of his eye he caught a glimpse of Loretta. She was on the other side of the street at the dirty run down motel. He had followed her there and waited for her to come out again. He knew what he needed to do, and it had to be done today.

The Fog
Dani drove along the deserted road. At four in the morning there was never much traffic. Lately it was one of the things that Dani liked about opening the gas station every morning. It gave her time to think. This morning was her first day back at work in almost a week. The last few days had been dark and bleak, leaving her gasping for air as she tried to find a reason to keep going, a reason to live. Dani felt lost. Her world came crashing down like shattered glass around her feet when her mother died suddenly. Tears welled in her eyes, blurring her vision, as she remembered their last conversation.
