Sam is a curious 13-year-old boy, who gets hold of anything interesting he finds, medium-sized, with piercing gray eyes. With his both beloved parents he lives, at his Mother's house, in the outside of the city, in the vast and wide countryside, in a village where an ancient deep undiscovered forest lies, which no record is left since the last time someone crossed it, and had the wits to go far into its centre, where not a single ray of light has made it through; vegetation has been wildly and densely growing over the last few decades. Legends say, that the last human being who dared go in in hope of fame, never came out; over the next years, every nightfall till darkness left, moaning, and yowling noises were heard from within, proved not to come from the wind, believed by many that it came from wolf's howling, by others from fierce trees, still devouring and gobbling up its dead body, no one has agreed to anything, yet… At school, he has not got much friends, but he has a best friend, Andrew, who likes to play with him or go with him when he is alone. It was a Thursday morning, and Sam had woken up to find a gorgeous looking golden watch, lying on top of his drawer, which without a moment of hesitation, he decided to put on around his thin wrist. Whenever Andrew and Sam find they have free time, because both of their parents are working, they tend to do adventurous things they probably shouldn't do, sometimes resulting a bit risky. Today, after school they chose to do something, perhaps not something very clever to do. They had already been thinking about going camping, by talking to their parents, but both didn't exactly want to tell them where, also, they would be bringing a few more friends in. The school bell had rung, indicating it had finished. Sam and Andrew had a quick glance at each other and they fast packed up. Past the school gate, feeling free, running and deeply breathing fresh air, they gazed eagerly for their objective, now seen from far, the forest.

“Remember, as soon as we have finished setting up all the tents we must come back and call all the other friends who are coming.” Andrew said, as he crisscrossed his feet over the smear street.

“True, I’d totally forgotten about the others coming.” Sam answered reluctantly, as if he had not been noticing him talking.

Dusk was arriving, thinking that Andrew and Sam would be the first people to enter that wicked and gruesome forest since decades, which no one knows how it is, who is there, and what you can find, anyone could be horror-stricken, if they knew… A path opened narrowly and started to widen from the street; dried plants with not a single leaf left, were lined up in rows, planted on shattering pots, falling into pieces. It was getting cold, evening had arrived, the sun was now setting below the horizon. Andrew went first, followed behind by Sam.

It was now completely dark, everything was pitch-black, nothing could be seen except for themselves. Sam took out his large flashlight from his bag pocket. He put it on, and pointed at the floor towards them. The path now seemed to get narrower, at each pace the soil soggier; the air getting colder and colder. The forest entrance was now just ahead of them. All of a sudden, they saw a dark shadow which swiftly moved, and heard a hissing sound, from behind a bush. Both stood as still as a stone, horrified, not daring to make a sound.

“What could it be Andrew? I won't move until we discover what is the thing moving behind the bush,” Sam softly whispered, barely breathing.

As he carefully inclined is head forward, hoping to see what it was, it disappeared. Then, the rustling noise was quickly getting farther and farther, into the wilderness, together with the hissing. Sam and Andrew were extremely relieved, now that it had gone, but still afraid; they did not know if it would reappear, or something worse. Finally, they stood front to front with the forest gate, encrusted with rust. To their surprise, it was open, a worn out wooden sign was nailed to it, which read: Beware! It seemed more dreadful than any living person would have thought of. Sam, trembling with fear, handed his torch to Andrew, who was also quivering. Andrew strongly held it, and bravely pointed to the forest entry. They looked inside, and everything they saw was dim, you would only distinguish the waterlogged soil, and the tall dark trees lined up in rows, taking you deeper and deeper into the forest. The flashlight started flickering and making a faint buzzing noise, it went off and on, off and on. Andrew was shocked, he let it drop to the floor and looked terrorized at Sam, who was as terrorized as him. Sam lowered to the floor, and got the torch. As he stood up, the flashlight got extremely bright, and shone everything found around, and with a last loud whiz, it went dead. Magically, the symbols carved in the golden watch Sam had found, were lighting up, and soon filled the surroundings with light. He pushed the gate open and it made a creaking sound, they both took to the right hand side, and were looking for a place in which to set the tents. There was wild vegetation growing uncontrollably, which would make you struggle to get through. They would camp near the entrance, they didn't want to go far in. Andrew bumped his head with something hard.

“Sam! I think I've found a place to camp!” Andrew shouted.

“I hope it is a proper one, I'm sick of searching for a clear part of the floor without plants,” replied Sam. He received no answer.

He turned back and saw nothing. He didn't know were Andrew had got to. Not even his things were there.

“Andrew!” he yelled with all his might, making his name echo throughout the entire forest. He received no answer. Only the creepy silent replied. He saw a stone arch, entangled entirely by dense vegetation. He neared to it, and found Andrew's red scarf ripped between the sharp thorns from a blackberry bush. Slowly, he was going to get it, and something pushed him forward, and he fell.

He cried. His whole body had been cut by the thorns. As standing up, he turned round and saw a completely different scene, a gigantic building in ruins, totally capped with dust, with falling cement rocks onto the forest floor. It looked like a sort of castle, it had thick tall golden doors, with some tiny glass windows in its center. Nearer and nearer he got to that building, which by now, was crumbling down into pieces. A huge metallic sign, also covered with a reddish-brown rust-like colour read: ZACHARIAS TOY FACTORY.

All of a sudden, he heard a ghastly voice, which made him halt, and spoke: “Don't get nearer or misfortune will chase you for the rest of your life. Don't get nearer or madness will come upon you. Don't get nearer or you will find your way to death. Don't get nearer or every moment for the rest of your life will be cursed.” With this it stopped.

Sam was in great dismay, as he pinched himself over and over again, to make sure this wasn't a nightmare. He was exhausted and sweating. He couldn't bare it any more. With a last effort he took off his ponderous bag, managed to stay firm, and as fast his legs could carry him, he run for his life, he sprinted all the way through the forest searching madly for the gate. He wouldn't find it. A small stone stuck to the floor made Sam trip over himself and somersault in mid-air, and he fell flat to the floor with his face. His arms and legs, hands and face were filled with blisters. Wearily, he stood up, and he heard a voice calling for his name. This time not a frightening and evil one, but a quite familiar one.

“Sam? Is it you?” said the familiar voice.

“Andrew! It’s me Sam! Help me! I want to get out of this place as quick as possible,” replied Sam, coughing but at the same time extremely happy. It was daytime, and the blazing sunlight returned part of Sam's cheerfulness. He stood up with Andrew’s help, and walked slowly, jumping with one leg, held by Andrew, and got to the gate, which Andrew had found.
