My Review of 'Overlord'

A little known movie about zombies in World War II. How did it turn out?

I had a lot of hesitation when I first heard the concept of Overlord. The movie trailers was typical of World War II movies where soldiers are in combat in France fighting Nazi's. This one had a twist when they added zombies to the mix.

It seems like an easy cop out to throw zombies to the mix. They do this to video games when they want to add life to the game's fan base. Add zombies and people will buy the add-ons.

I'm sure the filmmakers for Overlord understood that the film industry is saturated with World War II movies so they added this twist to it. Why not? After all we see it everywhere with TV shows and films such as World War Z, The Walking Dead, and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I wouldn't be too surprised if they made a Jurassic World where there's zombie dinosaurs.

They added zombies to World War II. Why the heck not? As you can see they already made Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. So naturally, I thought it would be a movie that's over the top that doesn't take itself seriously. It has to be a movie that's so bad it's good right?

Nope, is a full on action, thriller and horror movie. It was definitely not what I was expecting.

It starts off with a group of airmen in a plane ready to deploy over France. Their mission is to destroy a radar on top of a church in a small town in France. It's pretty standard fare for a World War II movie. They developed the characters quite smoothly in this movie.

As the movie goes on they peel away layers of each of the characters with random stories to give us an idea what they're like. No flashbacks are required to give us an understanding of certain backstories.

Not too long after we see a hellish firefight in the sky where planes are going down. Gun fire is being shot into their plane and people are dying so fast you can't keep count.

The graphics and art direction for the firefight are fantastic. You really get a good sense of how chaotic and dire their situation is. I actually felt so bad for each of the characters in the situation.

The main character Boyce, played by Joven Adepo, plays a stereotypical goodie too-shoes soldier. He's innocent and is up to the challenge to do what needs to be done.

He survives the parachute drop and finds himself alone. Bullets are flying everywhere and he doesn't know what to do. Luckily the character named Ford, played by Wyatt Russell, finds the green soldier and takes him under his wing. They meet up with a few other soldiers.

Before long they bump into a girl just strolling through the forest by the name of Chloe, played by Mathilde Ollivier. It did seem really odd that she's walking in the middle of a battlefield so carelessly. Pay no mind to that, after all there's going to be zombies!

Chloe is trying to protect her family and basically does whatever she can to keep her family safe, including some unsavory things with a Nazi soldier.

The soldiers befriend Chloe and soon find out what the Nazi's have been doing in the French town. There's a secret to the French town that no one knows and basically that secret is the catalyst to the Nazi experiments of having immortal soldiers.

There are a few jump scares here and there and some brooding moments. I can't quite categorize this as a horror movie though. It's more of a melange of different genres all in one. In certain aspects, it's also a revenge movie.

The action sequences are really well done. They put you at the edge of your seat anticipating on what happens next. I like the feeling that you don't know if any of the characters are safe. Anything can happen in this movie because it's chaotic and that's one of it's charms. I felt like I was at the edge of my seat because of the crazy things that were happening in this movie.

Overall, I would say that this movie is definitely worth checking out. Definitely not for the squeamish though. There is a lot of violence and gore to this movie, but if you can get over that you'll have a really intense movie to watch. I think this movie's a bit of a hidden gem that a lot of people are overlooking. In my perspective, this movie is more of an eight out of 10. Like I said before, it's not for everyone, but if you're into action it is a great film!
