She Will Be You

SHE IS YOU, SHE IS EVERYONE

“Why don’t we start at the beginning?” I take out my phone and start recording our conversation to begin the interview process. “Hello, my name is Hex Stratford and I’m with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This will be my third interview of the day. We’re right outside of Central Par.k” A gust of wind bellows through the park as children can be heard playing in the background. The sky is gloomy and full of darkness, but not a single drop of rain has fallen from the heavens. “Why don’t we start with your name?”

She musters up enough strength to vocalize, “My name is Jane Emerson.”

Jane is a white female who is scared to her core and is shaking even though she is wearing a jacket. Her eyes look dilated and she is crouched down in a field position on the bench. He makeup isn’t done and she has barely gotten herself together for the interview. “Jane, how old are you”?

She replies at the speed of molasses as if she must process such a simple question. “Twenty-one, I’m twenty-one.” I didn’t know what to think of her, she looks as if she's seen a puppy die.

“Jane, I’d like you to tell me what happened on December twenty-second, 2018.” She bites her jaw and immediately looks distressed. She holds herself even tighter then she was before, but then she closes her eyes. Jane tries to speak but silence is evoked from her airway. For a fraction of a second, I thought this was going nowhere until she pulled out her camera and pushed is over to my side of the table.

Once I gathered it I looked back at her and she was staring intently at me. “Watch.” That was all she said.

The view of the camera is slanted as something in the distance approaches through the tall grass and then points with its freakish fingers towards Jane. The camera slips out of her hands and then she sprints away. “It was once my friend but now he’s gone, I couldn’t save him. It hangs them in the trees but makes sure someone else will find them.” Jane can’t stop talking all of sudden.

I attempt to ask a question to penetrate her knotted mine. “What do you mean he hangs-”

She cuts me off mid-sentence. “Don’t interrupt me or I’ll forget again.” Her eyes are the size of oranges and she stares only at the camera.

I continue to watch as she speaks. “We went out there to see if it was real, to know the truth. It was in the trees, no matter how far we ran it would find us. It would use the woods to be everywhere, coming out of this tree and then the next one.” She starts biting her fingernails as if she had been starving herself. “It drank him like a spider does to its victims and it would never speak, only carve into the bark. Its web was the forest and we were trapped inside it.” Tears swell in her eyes as she panics in public. “Oh god, I’m so sorry Hayden! Why did I take you, why!"

I put my arms around her shoulders and try to calm her down but she freezes at my touch. Her arms twitched so I take them in my hands and look at her in the eyes. “Did you take anything before coming here?”

She looks back up at me with her head cocked, “I’m in you, I’m everyone, I’m in you, I’m everyone. It was all over the woods, she gets inside your mind makes you kill or kill yourself. All it takes is her touch and it over.”

I ask, “How did you escape”?

She takes a breath, “I didn’t, she let me go because she is in me. But now since you’ve touched me, she is everyone...Watch.” The camera plays continuously on repeat and something picks it up. A faceless being with only teeth looks back at me through the camera. Jane puts her hands on my skull and says “see.” Smoke appears to us both but it feels like it’s all in my mind. I’m taken into a forest surrounded by white mist and Janes with me but covered in blood. I see the man she’s talking about hanging from the tree behind her. Jane is panting and points her finger out into the mysterious forest. She says “watch” and I see the creature in the distance looking back at us pointing out its freakish fingers...Just like Jane...
