Netflix has a decent selection of horror movies but a lot of them are not decent enough to enjoy. There are some good Netflix horrors hidden among the massive collection of unsatisfactory horror.
A group of friends on a vacation find themselves trapped in a cave being hunted by something hidden in the darkness.
Don't get too attached to any characters in this film because it is not going to end well for them. Reinventing the fear of what could be hidden in the dark, this film will leave you horrified of what may live in any caves you come across. If you love bloodthirsty creatures then this was made for you.
'Before I Wake'
Jessie (Kate Bosworth) and Mark (Thomas Jane), after losing their son, decide to adopt young Cody. Unaware that Cody is terrified of falling asleep, they begin to witness the beauty of his dreams and horror of his nightmares. Hoping to help Cody, Jessie, and Mark search for answers.
This film is not for the faint of heart. With nightmares becoming a threatening reality, no one is safe. Not even Cody himself. This movie will make you jump out of your skin at some of the frightening things you will see.
In need of cash, Aaron (Patrick Brice) comes across an ad online willing to pay for filming. Without much thought, he heads out and meets Josef (Mark Duplass). Trusting Josef, at first, Aaron begins filming. As time goes on, Aaron begins to see that Josef is not someone to trust.
If your trust issues were not bad enough, this film will certainly do the trick. Sometimes all it takes is a good horror movie to reestablish the fact that not all people are who they claim to be. Using the found footage look, this film will leave you very unsettled and paranoid.
Six people kidnapped and imprisoned in a system of boxes that are wired to kill. They must work together if they have any hopes of escaping the endless nightmare of cubes.
This movie will certainly have you on the edge of your seat as you discover more about the characters and the horror of their situation. With little to no information about where they are or what they have been trapped in, watching these characters work together to figure a way out will have your nerves all over the place. This horror-thriller is an unexpected masterpiece.
Based on a Stephen King novel, Gerald Burlingame (Bruce Greenwood) and his wife Jessie (Carla Gugino), looking to spice up their marriage, go to their remote lake house. When a sex game kills Gerald, Jessie is left handcuffed to the bed with seemingly no escape.
This unsettling film will leave you struggling to stomach everything you have seen. As Jessie suffers from hallucinations while trying to escape, this movie created an unbelievable tense atmosphere that leaves its audience unnerved but wanting more.
'Let Me In'
A young 12-year-old boy named Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee), that is bullied by his classmates and neglected by his parents, forms a well-needed friendship with his new neighbor Abby (Chloë Grace Moretz). Soon, Abby's father leaves her to fend for herself causing Owen to suspect Abby is hiding a secret.
This Hollywood remake is not so easily forgotten once the film has ended. This film falls under so may genres that it is hard not to admire it. This film is not full of gore and scares but of Owen and Abby's unnerving relationship. This vampire remake is a remarkable film that will stay with you even after it ends.
Will (Logan Marshall-Green), after receiving an invitation, goes to his ex-wife Eden (Tammy Blanchard) and new husband, David's (Michiel Huisman) dinner party. As the night progresses, Will becomes haunted by the old couple's past while equally being haunted by Eden's odd behavior. Beginning to feel his invitation had a darker meaning behind it than just a simple dinner party, the evening becomes covered with death.
The film is full of tension and builds up to an escalated series of deaths that leave the audience in shock. The ending of the film is unexpected and truly unnerving. The build-up taking most of the film the shock of the climax leaves the audience dazed and surprised. This film will definitely mess with your head.
Veronica decides to play with an Ouija board, in hopes of contacting her dead father, with two friends. After Veronica has a horrifying reaction to using the board her world begins to turn. Veronica begins to suffer from hallucinations, visions, and nightmares. Unaware of what awaits her, she begins to look for answers to protect her three younger siblings.
This list would not be complete without Veronica. This film is terrifying and lingers with the audience days after watching. With so much hype around the film, you'd expect it to be disappointing but it lives up to all the hype it gets. A truly horrifying tale and brutal ending, this is not a film to skip.
With so many disappointing horror movies on Netflix, it becomes difficult to find anything worth watching under the horror category anymore. Netflix has its few decent horror films hidden amidst the mess that just takes time and chance to discover. These few movies are certainly enjoyable horror gems and with time, I'm sure more will be discovered.
