It started out any other December night, just laying in bed and talking about work. She was a writer and I was a general laborer, as she got to stay in the warm house, typing down words, I worked outside in the elements pushing and pulling train cars. Even though we were both different in styles and opinions, it didn't matter any because we both loved each other. Even though I didn't know it, my heart was about to break with the ringing of her phone. When she got finished and hung up the phone, she had informed me it was her father inviting us to Christmas at his place, it wasn't often we got to see him as he was always on the road. It was just a few days' notice, and a distance we had to go, I told her we should go, and we will pack the following afternoon.

The following morning I had woke to the smell of sausage, eggs, and warm syrup pancakes. I quickly got dressed and ran down the stairs, as it must have been a special occasion for her to make breakfast before work. As I had kissed her good morning and she sat my plate on the table, she informed me that while I was at work that day, she would be taking a day to pack our belongings to go to her father's house. For as much as I love my wife and love spending time with her, I couldn't wait for breakfast to be over so I could get on with my day and be home to leave for her father's. I grabbed the last piece of sausage off my plate, while I was sliding my coat on. I kissed her one last time with greasy sausage lips and slipped out the door. As I climbed into my dirty dodge ram, I had realized I forgotten my keys, I jumped out and ran back to the door where my beautiful wife had met me, dangling the keys in front of me. I grabbed them and gave her one last kiss as I raced off to work.

The morning was just as cold and crisp as the night and I could still see some of the stars peaking through the blue sky. All I could think about was taking vacation time and spending the rest of the week with my amazing wife, and her father. Work went by quicker then most days, the demanding minutes turned into hours and before I knew it I was getting ready to go home. I finished up my work, shut everything down, and headed out the door, jumped back into my dirty dodge, and drove straight home. The roads were full of holiday shoppers and visitors but all I cared about was getting home. As I pulled into the drive I could tell something was wrong, the air didn't feel pure and crisp as it had when I left, it felt disturbed and dirty, it felt as if an evil presents had went though. As I surveyed the grounds I seen a doe and fawn lying in the pasture beside our house.

I thought nothing of them and slowly slipped out of my truck as I grabbed the pistol I had hidden under my seat. I slowly crept up to the front door, where I noticed it was cracked open, and I could smell something burning, smelt like sausage and biscuits. I thought there could be no way my wife had left the stove on the whole day and burnt food while she was home. I had just spoken to her hours before and wouldn't believe something bad happened. I snuck my way into the foyer and slowly approached the kitchen and as I got closer I heard movement, pots and pans being thrown around and slight cursing under breath even though I couldn't make out who was saying it. I held my gun at chest high and rounded the corner to catch the culprit off guard and to my surprise it was my wife. She had tried to surprise me with an early dinner before we left and got caught up in a story, about a fawn and doe, and accidentally burnt it. I helped her clean up and turned a fan on to blow all the smell of burnt out of the house.

As I went upstairs to gather our belongings for the trip I took a quick turn and looked at my wife. The way the sun was shinning through the window on her beautiful long brown hair, she turned to see if I was gone, my eyes locked with her beautiful hazel eyes, glistening with excitement. She mouthed how much she loved me from the top of a stool, and I continued my track upstairs. Upstairs as I grabbed our black, rolling, to go bags, and looked out the window to see the doe and fawn gone, when I went to turn to leave the room, when I heard my wife scream, clattering of pans and dishes, and glass shattering. Without thinking I picked the bags up quickly and ran down the stairs to see my wife passed out on the floor, it looked as though the dishes had fallen out of the cupboard onto her head causing her to be knocked out. I threw the bags down and rushed to her side, quickly picking her up, to wake her, as I called the emergency line on my cell phone.

I could hear the ambulance coming down the road as I tried desperately to wake her up, as she was beginning to wake, she told me she was startled by a fawn peaking in the kitchen window at her and she lost her footing on the stool and fell, pulling everything with her. The emergency personnel came into the house and checked her up and down and bandaged the wound on her head, the advised that she go to the hospital for a follow up in case something major had happened they couldn't see. She denied the offer and stated we had somewhere to be before Christmas. I told the emergency personnel that I would keep an eye on her and if anything went was wrong I would personally take her in. I assisted my wife to the couch where the EMT's told her she couldn't fall asleep, in fear of a concussion. I kept my eye on her, and told her I'd be back, I had to take the luggage to the car.

I carried our luggage out instead of rolling it to the car in fear of bothering my wife who was now nursing a headache, I picked up our medium sized black luggage bags and carried them to the car. As I closed the house door, I made my way down the long sidewalk to our driveway. Evening had fallen on us now and I wasn't for sure if we'd make it on time to my father-in-laws. I could hear the slight sound of crickets and a faint sound of an owl hooting in the distance, and yet again I could see the doe and fawn. I paid no mind to them and opened the hatch back of our little red Subaru and gently tossed the bags in, as I continued my track back to the house, I checked to see if the fawn and doe were still there, and they were gone. I went into the house and advised my wife that for our safety it was probably the best, so she would stay awake. I helped her to the car and placed her in the driver seat. I told her not to worry about anything, we'll clean up the dishes and mess when we got home and as for dinner we'd just grab something to go.

As I was walking around the the passenger side of the car my wife started it up and waited for me to get into the car. I climbed into the car and we proceeded on our way. She seemed so alert and fine to drive. It was a long distance between our home and my wife's small little brick home, with large windows, which seemed to always be lit up with festive decorations. My wife's mother passed many years before and my wife was all he had left. It was the night before Christmas eve and my wife was driving as safely as she could, all she wanted to was to make it to her father's home fine. From my perspective she was driving just fine and I was going to have her pull over every so many miles to take a break.

At this time we were needing gas so we pulled over at the closest gas station to pickup gas. The gas station was an old run down, dirty looking store that looked as though it didn't belong in this nice part of town. However I didn't care I proceeded inside to pay for the gas and get some dinner. As I entered there was a scruffy old man with lots of life experience in his eyes, and I could tell he was tired. His long grey hair flowed over his ears and almost seemed to combine with the grey ear hairs protruding. He had grey facial hair that looked as though he hadn't shaved for weeks, and his smile was as weak and wrinkly as he was. I gathered up our dinner and walked to the counter, where the old man was. His foggy blue eyes fell upon me as I walked up and placed my items on the counter. I paid for the items and got the gas I needed and walked out the door to never see the man again.

The night had gotten colder and darker and I was worried about the ice on the road, and how our trip would be affected. I got to the car, handed my wife her dinner, and began to pump the gas. As I did so my wife and I got talking about the events of the day and how she had seen the same fawn and its mother in the meadow next to the store. She said the fawn seemed to want my wife to follow her. My wife had also mentioned that something else seemed to be on her mind. She informed me the reason for her father wanting us to visit was because a few weeks before he had gotten the news that he had colon cancer, he was in the last stages, and he only had 3 months to live. News like that would put anyone on edge and I understood why my wife was so distracted. I finished up and we went on our way down the dark empty highway.

As we drove down the road, my wife had turned on Christmas music and was listening to it help keep her awake. The music was slowly starting to make me fall asleep, and before I knew it I was asleep in the passenger seat. I woke up in pain and to the sound of the car's horn blaring. I forced my eyes open and it was difficult to see, as they were being forced closed by blood. I looked around to see what happened and out of the driver side window I seen the doe and fawn, I was beginning to get agitated with them as they always seem to be around when bad things happen. I reached over to grab my wife's hand and as I grabbed it she squeezed back. After I felt that she was fine, I passed out from the pain of my wounds. I woke up moments later and forced my eyes to open and looked down at my wife's hand. I followed her hand up to see how hurt she looked when I realized that it wasn't connected to the rest of her body. I began to freak out, I checked the back seat, and noticed the front driver side of the windshield.

I tried to shove my door open when I realized my hand and arm were broken from the crash. I finally managed to get the door open and I fell onto the ground, as I tried to stand I noticed that my foot was broken and I wouldn't be able to walk. I wiped my face with my shirt so I'd be able to find the rest of my wife. I crawled around the front of the car and was looking for her. As I was searching by the lights of the car I finally came across her body five yards away from the car.

I place my hand upon her neck to see if she was breathing and if her heart was still beating. Her heart was beating but not so well, and as soon as I grabbed her hand, she opened her eyes and looked at me with her starry hazel eyes, and told me how much she loved me and we'd be together forever. I picked her up and held her close to my heart and kissed her on the lips as I caressed her face. As I was crying and holding her close the fawn and doe come up to us, the fawn placed her head on my shoulder and the doe laid its head on my wife's legs, and I could see a tear roll down its face. As soon as the doe lifted its head off and it and its mother walked back into the trees, I saw my wife's spirit meet with the fawn, she turned looked at me and smiled. I couldn't help but know that my wife was heading to a better place.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my cell phone and called the emergency line, I informed them what happened and where we were. They dispatched an ambulance and I fell asleep lying next to my wife. As I lie there I see the doe come back up to me and lick my cheek, she laid her head on my legs and I felt as though I had fallen into a deep sleep I'd never wake from. When I woke, I had lights shining brightly into my eyes and it took a short time to adjust and when I did, I seen my wife standing over me. Her beautiful starry eyes starring down at me and she reached over to hold my hand, she told me that everything was going to be alright and to give in to the lights. As I closed my eyes I seen the doe standing behind my wife, and that's when I felt the warmth of the lights taking me in, I sunk into this warmth and let it over take me.
