The Station

(Short Story Opening)

At 5 o'clock, whilst Mary was standing outside Oslo, central station

awaiting her train, she stared off into the horizon. Her train was late

and the day had been tiresome and long. Jack, her fiancé left her that

morning and nothing could go, quite right after. She couldn't help but

wonder where she had gone wrong. She'd done everything for Jack, yet

he'd left her, for some underaged trollop.. She'd always known Jack

liked younger women, what with himself 29 and herself 21, but she'd

never have guess. So engrossed in this though she was that the minutes

slipped by, she lost track of how late the train was and didn't notice

the eerie blue grey fog creep up upon the station.

She broke her daze a moment, suddenly aware the sun was staring to set

and the train was incredibly late. Seriously nothing could go right,

at this rate she thought, she might need to taxi home. Standing quickly

and swearing as one of her heels broke, and tearing them both off and

throwing them into the distance, before walking to the edge to look for

the train. Squinting she thought she could see the train, bout time she

thought and blinked to be sure, noting it seemed to be coming in faster

than normal.

Closer and closer the train drew quickly nearer now, it seemed to to

almost be on fire, surrounded in a blue grey smoke.

Quickly Mary stepped back, reaching into her purse for her cell phone,

desperately searching for a signal, that wasn't cutting in and out. She'd

need to report this there could be lives in danger, even with all that

had happened that day, she knew dying would surely top all her problems,

now seemingly small and trite.

Finally a signal, it was weak but it'd have to do, she fumbled with the

phone dialing emergency as suddenly the train flew by. She paused,

gaping at how wrong the train looked, nothing seemed to be burning but

it was dark and enveloped in the blue grey smoke...

No blue grey mist she thought suddenly and where were the people she

could not see a single soul. Although to be fair the mist made it

difficult.

The train flew by, dragging the air around it shattering the silence

not once but twice as it hit the switching post and derailed suddenly.

Oh my god she thought, suddenly rushing towards the train, forgetting

her own safety. That's when she noted the smell; it was sweet like roses

and yet foul like produce left too long on a supermarket shelf. Her

lungs felt tight and her legs weak as the smell surrounded her. She felt

faint dropping her cell, the last thing she heard was hello, hello what

is your emergency?, and all was black.

A television flicks on in the darkness, The words breaking news flashes across the screen. A young lady appears and in a soft voice announces:

This is Jen Hensen and tonight on the ten o'clock news, Oslo Central shut down after a train derailed, this evening. Eye witness reports claim there was a dark fog in the area and the military, has quarantined the area 5 blocks in all directions. More this evening.

Smiling, watching the Television in the darkened room, he sits there, tapping a cigarette. "Perfect" he thinks aloud to himself, before

lighting it and taking a long, slow drag. "Soon the vaccine will cleanse all and Earth shall be cleansed, once and for all" finishing his thought, relaxing as a smile, slowly spreads across his thin, aging lips. He closes his eyes. Enjoying what is to be his last cigarette, smoking right to the end, before he takes a deep breath, grabbing the revolver from the table next to him. Lifting it to his mouth, knowing his part was over, he forced himself to pull the trigger as many times as he could, although he was gone before the first sound reached his ears, all was black.
