'Veronica' Movie Review

Is it really as scary as everyone says? What's all the hype?

So for the past month or so all over my social media I have been seeing all this hype about the movie Veronica and how people were not able to finish it because of how terrifyingly creepy it was. Being a horror movie lover that I am, I decided to give it a try, not really sure exactly what to expect because horror movies on Netflix are always a hit or miss. I had watched some rather good ones before, and then there were others that were so cheesy they gave horror movies a bad name. So I got comfy on the couch in my living room with my mom and a bowl of popcorn ready to watch, but before I did, I looked online for a little bit of background because apparently it was based on true events.

To give a little bit of background, the story is based on true events. According to NME News, the movie is based on a story of a girl named Estefania Lazaro who supposedly died in Madrid in 1992 after using a Ouija board. She tried to conduct a seance in the basement of her school to communicate with a friend's deceased boyfriend. For 6 months afterwords, she would experience seizures and hallucinations which are shown throughout the film, she died in the hospital shortly after but her death was unexplained. This review scared the crap out of me, so I suspected this was going to be a really scary film. Was it? Despite what some say, I didn't think it was that scary.

First off, it was really difficult to be super focused on the movie in all it's glory because it was in Spanish, so I was focused on reading the subtitles so I knew what was going on. I don't generally watch movies with subtitles, but I was excited to give this one a try. If you speak the language, it may be a little more enjoyable because you won't have to read the subtitles at the bottom. They also spoke rather quickly, so sometimes I would lose the plot, and this ruined the effect of the horror a little bit. I also thought the movie started off a little slow, it took a little time for the plot to actually get going, and this left me questioning if anything was actually going to happen. It took about 30 minutes for it to really get underway with the main idea of the film. Compared to movies like Paranormal Activity and The Babadook, there wasn't anything that seemed eerie about it at all leading up to the big scare. I like to see signs building up to the ultimate effect in the middle of the film and there wasn't any of that in this movie.

However, I really enjoyed the actors and actresses used in this film, they were extremely convincing and this aspect of the film was one I wouldn't change. They showed realistic emotions and their facial expressions, and body language showed all of the emotions that the audience should be feeling (even though I didn't really feel it, LOL). The main character showed true emotion almost like she was really dealing with the situations in real life. I also thought the graphics were impressive, the film is based around shadows that the main character sees, and the hallucinations that she has are extremely realistic. Had I been more prepared, the graphics would have creeped me out, and they did in some regard, I felt the darkness where it was supposed to be felt.

Overall, not my favorite horror film, but definitely a good watch if you like creepy movies as opposed to "scare your pants off" scary films. I like jumpy, but this is good if you're afraid of the dark. Hope this review helped, and happy watching :)
